Person-Post: James Yeates – Associate Fellow

qualified as a veterinarian in 2004 from the University of Bristol, and worked as a veterinary surgeon for four years, subsequently undertaking a bachelors degree in bioethics and starting a PhD in veterinary ethics. He gained his certificate and diploma in animal welfare science, ethics and law from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and is currently a diplomate in animal welfare science, ethics and law. James now works as the British Small Animals Veterinary Association (BSAVA)/Petsavers/RSPCA Resident Scholar in Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law at the University of Bristol. This role involves clinical and expert witness work alongside research in animal welfare science and veterinary ethics. James is a member of the British Veterinary Association Ethics and Welfare Group, the Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law Veterinary Association Committee, and the BSAVA Scientific Committee, and is the Honorary Secretary for the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons. He has been an Associate Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics since 2006. James edits the Journal of Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law, and is currently writing a book for the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) animal welfare series on Achieving Animal Welfare in Veterinary Practice. Published work includes papers on animal control, quality-of-life assessment, euthanasia, animal welfare values, positive animal welfare, death, stem cells, overtreatment, and medical authority and responsibility. His main interests are veterinary ethics, companion animal welfare, and the engagement of companion animal guardians in animal welfare issues.
