Associate Director Speaks at Pioneering Anti-Bullfight Conference

17th January 2008

The Centre’s Associate Director, Professor Priscilla Cohn will be one of the keynote speakers at the “United Against Cruelty” Anti-Bullfighting Conference in Barcelona, Spain, sponsored by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and by the Spanish member society Associacion Defensa de los Derechos Animales (ADDA) on 21st and 22nd February, 2008. The conference is part of a bold initiative to achieve a ban on bullfighting in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Prior to the conference, a petition will be presented to the Catalan Parliament on the evening of the 20th. More information about the conference, and how to register, is here. Commenting on the initiative, Professor Cohn said: “It is often supposed that bull-fighting has universal support in Spain, but in fact there is a growing constituency that wants to see the end of these cruel spectacles. Recent polls have indicated that over 80% of the Catalan people are against bull-fighting. Catalonia is leading the way, and I am proud to be a part of this new movement of ethical sensibility”.
